For science students, the future offers more than just engineering or medicine. Jayanti Ghose leads you in on the numerous professional and academic options.

Students opting for science at class XII usually have two major options to choose from: Engineering and medicine.

Yet, many are undecided about what they eventually want to pursue, and give themselves another two years to make up their minds.

As a class XII science student, the future offers much more than just engineering or medicine. Not only can you choose from innumerable avenues available to the science students but can also pick from the various options available to arts and commerce students. Some of these have been indicated below:

Professional courses/avenues

Those opting for a combination of Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics (PCM) can choose from any of the engineering branches including aerospace, agricultural, automobile, biotechnology, bioinformatics, ceramic, chemical, civil, computer science, information technology, electrical, electronics and communication, environmental, instrumentation and control, mechanical, leather technology, materials and metallurgical and mining.

Architecture : The School of Planning and Architecture, New Delhi, offers a four-year Bachelor of Planning course for class XII students with Science, Maths and English background. CEPT University, Ahmedabad (www.cept.ac.in) offers a five-year UG programme in interior design for science students.

Railways :The Special Class Railway Apprentices Exam (www.upsc.gov.in) after class XII (PCM) leads to careers in railways.

Defence and government jobs : For physics and maths students, entry into the Navy and Air Force wings of the National Defence Academy, Naval Academy and 10+2 (Executive Branch) is possible through the National Defence Academy Exam (www.upsc.gov.in).

Science-related openings in the Indian Army, Indian Air Force, the Indian Navy and Indian Coast Guard as also the state and central forest service jobs (through relevant competitive examinations).

The 10+2 Technical Entry Scheme of the Indian Army (www.joinindianarmy.nic.in) or 10+2 Technical Cadet Entry into the Indian Navy (www.nausena-bharti.nic.in) are also options you could choose from.

Science graduates could also appear for the Civil Services Examination, the Central Police Organisation Assistant Commandant Examination, Combined Defence Services Examination (only for male graduates), Probationary Officers' examination and the other competitive examinations.

Marine: Class XII with PCM would lead you to marine engineering or nautical science courses for a career in the merchant navy or pilot training.

Dairy technology: The National Dairy Research Institute, Karnal and Bangalore and the Sheth MC College of Dairy Science, Anand, are centres of excellence in dairy technology. Many general universities now offer dairy science as a vocational subject at the BSc level.
